More heat and more holes...

Well, believe it or not, I am STILL ALIVE even though it is 43 degrees celcius today ... and was yesterday ... and will be again tomorrow (and will continue to be for goodness knows how long! :-)

Fortunately though, my air-conditioning unit was fixed within 24 hours or so of it breaking. So, what with the oven-like conditions outside, I am gloriously spending as much of my daytime as possible, indoors!

Kind of strange really, considering it is summertime. :-)

However, when I did walk briefly outside on my way to work this morning, I got to see a giant river flowing down my street! A rather large water main burst in front of the hospital at around 7.30am, shutting down yet another road in my travels in less than two weeks. Actually, if you click on the following link, you can go ahead and SEE what I was looking at, first thing this morning! How cool is that??!! My street made it onto the news, whoopie! :-D Click on the main link, then click onto "Video: water main breaks" written in tiny print beneath the picture. :-) Hopefully it will work, so give it a go ....

Just think, I walk up and down that very sidewalk every day! Very funny.

Anyway, I really think Cincinnati's engineers need to take a good look at the road infrastructure here. Afterall, during the snowy season new potholes appear overnight whenever there is a downfall. I never really quite got to the bottom of why, but apparently snow breaks up the road somehow and creates a kind of "pothole-heaven". Now it's pesky sinkholes and water pipes causing all the motorists mayhem. :-)

Lots of hot air...

There seems to be quite a heatwave going on right now. Today the TV weatherman said that the weekend is going to be "dangerously hot". Translated into degrees celcius, it's supposed to be around 38, but with humidity that makes it feel about 5 degrees hotter.

And guess what happened yesterday...? The thermostat on the air-conditioning unit in my flat BROKE. Aaaaaargh!!!! It is now blowing copious amounts of hot air around the building. Very sad... and muggy, and sweaty, and hot. Hmph.

The landlord came today and replaced the dead thing. Only problem is that he's managed to replace it with another dead thing! Aaaaargh! Now I have even MORE hot air blowing around. :-(

I guess you might want to wish me luck for my upcoming and dangerously hot weekend, huh?

Sinkholes and Storms

Early one morning last week I was driving to work, minding my own business, when suddenly a great big hole appeared in the middle of the road!! Oh my god, did half the road just disappear in front of me??!! Hahaha.

Apparently this happens here occasionally. Hmmmm. Now, while I was able to squeeze my way past the sinkhole relatively okay, it did make me wonder about the rest of the road in that area ... especially as I was idling at a traffic light approximately 5 metres from the gap?!

Of course, within 5 minutes of the incident the road was cordoned off and remained closed for the next two days. I'm just hoping that someone gave the rest of that roadway a thorough engineering inspection! :-)

Nothing else very exciting has happened since then, except for the fact that Hurricane Dennis is currently sitting right on top of Cincinnati ... and doesn't seem to want to leave! Fortunately for us, the wind has blown out of it's sails since the storm made landfall over the weekend in Florida, but it is still dumping a ton of rain and causing a little bit of low-level flooding.

Considering how hot it has been lately though, I am actually quite enjoying the slight drop in temperature. :-)

Since today is the 4th of July, of course I had to go outdoors and witness the fireworks on display. :-D This photo was taken from one of the many grassy knolls that provides a fantastic vantage point of the city ... and the bridge from where the fireworks were set off.

I was going to take a photo of the actual display for you to see - as well as this 'before' shot - but I ended up getting so involved in watching it that I forgot all about my camera, hahahaha! Oops.

Car update, and the 4th of July

Well, guess what. As terrible and unfortunate as this is for my boss, while they were away on vacation and I was exploring the roads in the sports car, her husband fell off a ladder and broke his leg!!! Oh my god.

This of course means that he cannot drive at the moment. So, three guesses who gets to keep the little green sporty machine for a little bit longer, huh? :-D Whoopie!! And as if things couldn't get any better, it also happens to be Independence Day on Monday, so this means a long 4th-of-July celebration weekend coming up!

Long weekend - plus - car. Hmmmm. Nice. :-D
