Photos from the weekend

Here are a handful of photos from the weekend in Chicago. :-) Unfortunately it is late right now and I have a tonne of uni work to complete before the morning (ugh) otherwise I would write all about what I got up to, as well as the adventurous drive back to Cincinnati yesterday, haha! I will write about it soon ... promise ... :-)

But in the meantime, hopefully you will like the view from 96 storey up?! :-D

Driving into downtown Chicago on our arrival...

... somewhere near our hotel ...

A view of Chicago at night, 96 storeys up, taken from a bar we went to for my birthday...

The view from the women's toilet, hahaha! (The men were quite jealous, and a few even sneaked into the girl's bathroom to look!! Apparently they don't get any view at all. :-) See how the city curves around the lake's edge?

Looking directly down to the street and all the tiny dot-sized cars...

Katrina ... Ophelia ... now Rita...?

Ok, so three hurricanes in three weeks is just a bit much for any country, don't you think? Ophelia passed through Florida last week (thank goodness it wasn't as strong as Katrina was) but Rita? Unfortunately Rita is another Katrina-like "level 5" hurricane. What's worse, is that it is heading straight for Louisiana again!!!

The state of Texas is also in its path - another rather vulnerable part of the country. Mandatory evacuations are currently in force (surprise ... surprise!) and this time, everyone is following it! (I reckon I would too, hahaha!) The potential is not looking very pretty. :-(

Anyway, on a slightly brighter note, I'm off to Chicago tomorrow! It is my birthday this Friday and I am spending the weekend up north with a group of my Cincinnati friends. We are going to be staying right in the heart of downtown (known as the "Magnificent Mile") and I can't wait!!!! I will probably regret having taken the three days off from studies when next week rolls around and I am hideously behind in all my classes ... but sometimes I just think, "You only live once!" and I certainly don't want to spend my entire birthday with my head in Law text books. (Hell no, hahaha! :-)

So, Chicago, here I come!

Finally the photos...

I went for a walk yesterday and finally took some photographs of the suburb I'm living in! It is definitely the prettiest place around here, and I certainly enjoy all the trees and greenery ... compared to the concrete jungle that is the University of Cincinnati campus! :-)

...the park that the suburb, Mount Adams, sits in...

My flat is nestled up amongst that bunch of houses on the hill! :-)

One of the streets in the area...

Heading towards the lake...

Here's the lake and fountain at the bottom of the of the hill...

Somewhere to escape out of the sun, hahaha!

...the lake and the fountain in the distance...

A flower clock...

A flower arrangement in the middle of a roundabout...

One of the seating arenas for the park's outdoor concerts held every week during the summer months

Krohn Conservatory - where all the tropical plants grow. :-)

Being an old suburb, there are funny remnants of days-gone-by scattered throughout. I'm guessing this was an old bridge once?! (See the tiny speck of a person walking away on the left of the bridge? That gives you an idea of how huge it is! :-)

Labour Day in the USA...

A couple of months ago I was led to believe that the 4th of July was the big fireworks event of the year in the States ... but noone told me about Labour Day weekend??!!

Goodness knows why Labour Day gets such special pyrotechnic treatment, but the display certainly was pretty nice! Here are a selection of photos from the 35-minute long extravaganza. :-)

The best bit was I only had to walk 5 minutes from my flat to get this view. The roads into town were either gridlocked or closed off (to prevent further gridlock!) so there definitely are some bonuses to living on a hill next to the city. :-D

Some pinks and greens for something different...

Glowing "red, white, and blue"!

A fireworks "waterfall" cascading off one of the bridges...

...and also out of the sky...

After the storm dies down...

The tragedy in New Orleans this week really has been huge. Aside from the massive death toll and surrounding destruction, it's even sad to think that the home of jazz and all its associated history has just been wiped out for good. Even when they get to rebuilding the city, all that went before has now gone...

The University of Cincinnati Law School will be hosting some of the students from down south whose Law Schools got wiped out in the hurricane. I can't even begin to imagine what kind of state their minds will be in to try and study after a trauma like that(?!) but good on the university for taking them in.

Anyway, as predicted, Hurricane Katrina came through Cincinnati on Tuesday as a much less powerful 'tropical depression' storm. The weather pattern was still bad enough though to create a small tornado, that ripped through several houses in one street. I tried to drive in it too, which was a big mistake ... besides the howling winds and rain, there were loads of road closures and diversions that sent me into obscure parts of the city that I'd never seen before. At one point I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to find my way back into familiar territory again, hahaha! I was rather relieved when I finally got home.

Other than that, I took a photo of my hair today for you all to see how long it's got ... and this is after getting it trimmed last week! It's almost a miniature version of Repunsel. :-D

The length of my hair as of today ... even after getting it cut last week! :-)
